Spring Semester 2019 - From the New Year to Graduation

I feel that in schools, the fall is a season to sow, and the spring is a season to see the rewards of our efforts. There have been many accomplishments, too many to individually name, over the course of this year. From students, to staff, to administration, to parents… everyone plays an integral role in the development of our schools. I’m just so grateful from #TakePartThursdays, to PTA Meetings, to other events around the District to see how everyone comes together and supports these students each and every day. You are why I serve - and you are the true stars of the show. I just strive to give you the megaphone and recognition you deserve. :)

First, from a District-accomplishments perspective, here are some of the key items of note, in my humble opinion. Source for all is ThisWeek News, except the Report to the Community, from our District Communications Office.

Some specific legislative accomplishments of our Board are featured here, particularly a couple items from Facilities Development. Take a look:

We hear you! Here’s a good example of our District listening to you. Last year at a PTA meeting, Deputy Superintendent Dave Stewart and I listened to the concerns of parents at Buckeye Woods Elementary regarding their HVAC system. We also received some letters. After an investigation, and putting out competitive bids, we unanimously approved a contract last night to replace the system. Your voice matters. We love hearing from you!

Probably the most exciting resolution that I have had the honor to introduce so far, and which was passed unanimously at this Monday's meeting. We were all smiles on this vote. Thank you so much to the voters of our District - you are leaving a legacy that our children will benefit from for generations to come. After the procedural steps over this summer, hopefully soon thereafter, we'll be ready to break ground! 🏗🔨

I also love to pitch in wherever I can to help around the District. Here are some moments of fun :)

In February, a group of teachers, staff, students and I worked together to create the first Westland Spaghetti Dinner, which raised money for a new digital sign for the school!

Over the first year of serving on the Board, I strove to attend as many trainings, webinars and offerings from the Ohio School Boards Association, so that I could become the best Board Member I can for you and your family. I look forward to continuing training opportunities this year, and thank our District for making them possible! (Picture source: South-Western City School District Twitter)

Pictured here are all five Board members at the Council of PTA’s annual Reflections Awards. Our students and parents owe our PTA’s so much. They tirelessly put in hours creating events and programming for our students, and in cases like this, honoring students and staff on their achievements. I hope to help support PTA’s how ever I can! Reading to students at Richard Avenue Elementary School - this was “Green Eggs and Ham!”

One way we can also help is by spreading good ideas around. At Darby Woods Elementary, there is a well-established Gentleman’s Group for 3rd graders. There’s an article about them below. I was excited to share a Wednesday with them and discuss how to become a good citizen. But this initiative is so powerful, some different schools have begun networking to see how we can implement/tie together programs like this in every building. I thank Mrs. Crowley and all teachers who take time above and beyond their specified duties to assist with the social and emotional learning needs of our students. You are appreciated more than you know - and I hope to help your efforts flourish in 2019-20!

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via social media, this website, by phone or email at any time. As was mentioned in the beginning - it truly does take an entire community to raise a child. This is about all of us coming together to do right by our kids - I’m just here as one person to help us make that happen. Have a wonderful summer break!
